Tantora Celebration kicks-off from AlUla Old Town announcing the start of the long-awaited Winter at Tantora Festival
AlUla, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 23 December 2021:
Locals of AlUla have been celebrating the “Tantora” for generations. The Tantora itself is a sundial used by the local people not only to tell time, but also to mark the beginning of the winter planting season. This culturally significant festive season has always been filled with celebrations. The local community has been always proud of their old traditions, and they revive it every year, and now it’s time for visitors to explore and put hands on the old, beautiful and traditional celebration.
While Winter at Tantora is an extravagant six-week festival, the Tantora Celebration is a 5-day celebration, starts on 22nd December until 26th December, the celebration focuses on sharing the traditions and culture of the AlUla Oasis.
Throughout AlUla’s Old Town, you’ll find different special areas set up to showcase the local heritage and aspects of daily social life.
Visitors and attendees will be able to immerse with 4 remarkable experiences:
- The Traveller Ibn Battuta (45-minute performance)
This immersive live show introduces the ancient traveller Ibn Battuta, the iconic explorer, as he passed through AlUla during his travels, he encountered the locals and met their generosity and love, while the story is being told by the Rawi (the local guide).
- Tantora Performance (7-minute performance)
Gather at the Tantora sundial, much like the locals do, and sit to watch a thoughtful performance about the story of an older man wishing to revive his father’s land. Through this story, learn about the significance of the Tantora’s architecture and use.
- Explore the Farmer’s Market
Enjoy an authentic farmers market and purchase local goods fresh from the oasis farms.
- Let the Planting Begin
This hands-on activity lets visitors join in on the spirit of the Tantora Celebration. Put your hands in the soil and plant some crops of your own at a nearby oasis. All seeds, water and necessary planting tools will be provided.
Visitors in AlUla can experience the Tantora Celebration in AlUla Old Town from 22nd December till 26thDecember, the experience starts at 6:00 PM and at 8:30 PM and lasts for one and a half hours.
