Riyadh Hosts the International Conference on Genomic Medicine 2023, Featuring Genomic Programs from Gulf Nations

RIYADH: November 22th

The International Genomic Medicine Conference 2023 commenced today in Riyadh. The two-day event is hosted by the Centre for Genomic Medicine at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH&RC), under the theme “Genomics Paving the Way for Personalized Medicine”. The conference aims to shed light on the advanced applications of genomics in healthcare and address the challenges of its real-world implementation. It features a diverse audience of 250 speakers, representing both local and international experts, from a total of 15 countries.

The conference provided a comprehensive look into the genomic endeavors spanning multiple Gulf Cooperation Council nations. Participants had the valuable opportunity to explore the achievements and insights garnered from the Saudi Genomic Program, the Qatari Genomic Program, and the Emirati Genomic Program.

During the conference, the Genomic Medicine Center at KFSH&RC unveiled the Genetic Pharmacogenomic Analysis Service, tailored to match medications with an individual’s unique genetic code (DNA), enabling the prediction of medication effectiveness. This approach emphasizes the delivery of personalized and highly precise healthcare for each patient, commonly known as “personalized medicine.” The ultimate goal is to enhance treatment effectiveness while minimizing the potential harm caused by side effects.

Held at King Salman Auditorium in Riyadh, the two-day event covered four themes:  Innovative Genomic Technologies and Beyond, Genomics in the GCC, Personalized Medicine, and mRNA Technology.

Participants emphasized the need for a methodical transformation, including infrastructure enhancement, data harmonization, and interdisciplinary collaboration, to effectively integrate genomics and personalized medicine into the healthcare system.

This event aligns with the current trends in specialized healthcare, as the field of genomic medicine is poised for substantial growth in the coming years. This growth holds the promise of transforming patient healthcare, reshaping approaches by healthcare providers, enhancing system efficiency, and, in the long run, reducing overall costs.

The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center is globally recognized for its exceptional specialized healthcare services and groundbreaking innovations. It stands as an advanced hub for medical research and education, committed to advancing medical technologies and raising the standard of healthcare on a global scale. Through collaborations with prominent local, regional, and international institutions, it aspires to deliver world-class services in clinical care, research, and education.
