Empower saved 892 megawatts of energy in 2015

Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (EMPOWER), the world’s largest district cooling services provider, has recorded a milestone achievement in power saving over 892 megawatts of energy in 2015 by using district cooling instead of traditional air conditioning systems.

empower ahmedHE Ahmad Bin Shafar, Chief Executive Officer of Empower attributed that to the dramatic increase in efficiency in Empower’s cooling plants, acceptance to district cooling among end-users as well as building owners, and enhanced general awareness. Bin Shafar said Empower supports the long-term national Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

“We provide district cooling services to many businesses and hotels in Dubai, which are firms that follow strict environmental strategies that made them subscribe to district cooling. The data shows how big the DC systems benefit the environment, businesses and households in their energy consumption, and the state’s power grid,” said Bin Shafar.

“The saving in MW marks huge impact on power plant capacity of Dubai. Since adopting district cooling services in the UAE, we realised that this technology could contribute to energy saving and conservation of natural resources. Indeed, our strategy has led to making us a major contributor in Dubai’s transition towards a green economy,” added Bin Shafar.

According to Bin Shafar, District Cooling plants are far more efficient than conventional systems, using half the energy consumed by existing traditional cooling systems, and at the same time meet the growing demand for cooling services in Dubai.

Bin Shafar confirmed that district cooling accelerates economic development by providing environment friendly services that reduce wastage of natural resources.

Empower contributes in all possible ways to promote the use of district cooling technology, and engages more players in the goal of reducing energy consumption and lowering the impact on environment. For 12 years, the company’s strategy has proven its effectiveness in reducing electricity use and reducing CO2 emissions. Empower’s efforts are in line with the Dubai government initiatives in rational consumption, for companies or individuals.

Bin Shafar says that the expansion of Empower customer base makes the process of reducing the energy consumption a responsibility of everyone.
