Operation 300bn: The critical role of Smart Water in achieving a thriving economy

Comment by Francois Frigaux, Regional Director, Sensus, a Xylem brand, following the announcement of Operation 300bn:

“Operation 300bn has laid out a clear path for the UAE to become one of the leading global industrial hubs by 2031. The 10-year comprehensive plan announced by the UAE Government will revolutionize the industrial sector, and channel innovation to boost its contribution to the economy from Dh133 billion to Dh300 billion. While every commercial sector has a part to play in the UAE successfully making this leap, I believe water – our most precious resource and the heart of every prospering country – has a pivotal role in determining the success of Operation 300bn.

“It is no secret that water scarcity is a major concern for our region. According to the World Bank, the MENA region has the greatest expected economic loss from water shortages, estimated at 6–14 percent of GDP by 2050. Other challenges such as non-revenue water – water which is produced but lost before it reaches customers – is another prevalent issue for utilities across the world and can pose significant economic challenges on growing economies. Globally, utilities report that non-revenue water losses cost up to an estimated $40 billion per year.
