Huawei chief AI scientist shares how to reduce AI bias during Global AI Summit

Riyadh, KSA – Artificial intelligence (AI) is more important for industries than ever before, especially as Saudi Arabia’s leadership drives the Kingdom towards a digitally-empowered future. During the recently held Global AI Summit—organized by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) and G20 Saudi Secretariat as part of The International Conferences Program—Dr. Qi Tian, Chief Scientist in Artificial Intelligence in the Cloud Business Unit at Huawei, discussed how to overcome AI bias to ensure AI services are inclusive in their design and applications. 

According to Dr. Tian, reducing the cultural bias in AI models will require fairly distributed and standard benchmark datasets for both training and testing of AI models. Unbiased learning during training can be monitored by a benchmark evaluation during deployment, ensuring models satisfy ethical requirements. Human subjectivity must also be reduced in the data labeling process, which Huawei proposes to overcome by focusing on unsupervised or self-supervised learning. 

“There is exciting research that shows how unsupervised and self-supervised learning are more fair and more inclusive than supervised learning,” said Dr. Tian. “Through these learning schemes, AI models will theoretically become more inclusive, which we believe will move AI in a promising direction within the coming 1-3 years.” 

Bias can also be reduced by having a clearer understanding of the AI model. Huawei proposes that visualizing the parameters and intermediate variables of the AI model is a first step to understanding it more fully, which will enable the model to be analyzed and modified to increase inclusivity.
